Why did you choose to study at the University of South Australia (UniSA)?
"It is never easy to decide what we're going to do at university because no doubt, there are so many things that we want to learn about and it is important for us to gain the most valuable knowledge to become a better person and have a greater chance in getting a good job that we love doing in the future. This is why I personally think that studying a Bachelor of Arts would give me all the opportunities that I could get from a university. I have always wanted to become a French language teacher but my areas of interests were not only on language, but I am into film, theatre, and also political studies. It might sound very complicated when it comes to determining what was it that I really wanted to specialise in, but the Bachelor of Arts has offered me a course structure that would satisfy my interests and most importantly it meets the criteria and the graduate qualities of the University itself."
What are the benefits of UniSA and their teaching staff?
"The course offers a major in a language of my choice, professional specialisation, applied linguistic courses, as well as electives. I decided to specialise in teaching and hope to become a French language teacher one day. Applied linguistics courses have given me more insights on how languages and cultures work to make up communication among people. These courses have definitely changed the way I understand people around me especially those who come from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
The very highly qualified and knowledgeable lecturers were very helpful and positive in encouraging us to express our knowledge and understanding during classroom discussion and students were able to work autonomously in group presentations.
The best part of the course, the highlight of my experience, was the once in a lifetime opportunity for me to do a semester exchange in Université de Nice Sophia- Antipolis, in the South of France. This course gives the opportunity for students to go on the Student Exchange program with University partners all over the world, normally during the first semester of the third or final year of studies. I was in Nice for six months and I did my courses in French instead of English. Even though French is my third language, studying a bachelor of Arts earlier with the lecturers who are mostly native speakers of the language gave me the confidence that I needed as well as a good level of proficiency in the language in order for me to survive my whole semester in Nice. I thought going to a French- speaking country would be very useful for me to understand the language as well as the culture of the French society with first-hand experience. Going to France have improved my knowledge on the language and the culture of the target language and it was indeed the best decision that I have ever made in my life."
What is your advice to others?
"Given all of the experiences that I have had while doing this course, I would totally recommend a Bachelor of Arts to those who are really interested in languages and cultural studies. The course will definitely give anyone a great career opportunity in any areas at all because having knowledge of languages and cultures are essential in education or even in business!"
